As part of our relief works on the Island of Haiti, we regularly purchase, fill and transport shipping containers of aid directly to those most in need. These containers are packed full of donated items that will help improve life for children orphaned by the devastating 2010 earthquake. There’s 74 cubic metres of life changing capacity in each sea going container – everything from hospital beds to wheelchairs, construction supplies to clothing and first aid.
Our donors are the lifeblood of what we do – their generosity allows us directly help children who have lost everything. One such donor – Truly Fare – is a family owned business with a long tradition in children’s and ladies wear. Based in Belfast, Truly Fare are famous for the service and personal attention they have delivered to generations of school-going children.
Our most recent container was packed with donated schoolwear from the guys at Truly Fare. Hundreds of pairs of trousers, shorts, skirts and pinafores – not to mention bags and bags of jumpers, blazers, polo shirts and socks.
Donations like this help rebuild a school and education system on the Island that is at best fragile, with extreme shortages of clothing and materials – a daily challenge for those trying to deliver structure and some sense of normalcy to a generation of traumatised children.
The generosity of the guys at Truly Fare was humbling and the donated clothing will give the orphans of Haiti something priceless – a sense of pride that the upheaval of the last 9 years had taken away. To have had nothing for so long and then be given a smart school uniform may seem small to you and I, but for children who have lost everything it represents optimism and new beginnings.
